Hire a student

What salary should you offer a student?

The canton of Geneva has applied a minimum wage since 1 November 2020. For 2022, it amounts to CHF 24.32/hour (gross salary, without security deductions).

Depending on the type of work offered, the salary may exceed the minimum wage.

For private employers:

Consult ouro guideline list of wages for occasional work (tutoring, babysitting, physical and domestic work,....).

If holidays are not taken on time, they must be paid in addition, in accordance with the statutory provisions.

Employer obligations

All employers are required to comply with certain legal obligations when taking on employees. These include, but are not limited to:

  • payment of wages, including in the event of incapacity for work
  • hiring a person with a valid work permit
  • affiliation and payment of social security contributions
  • cover for occupational accidents (and non-occupational accidents if you work more than 8 hours a week)
  • protecting the employee's health and safety

Legal obligations vary from country to country and depending on the type of employment (employee profile, type of job). We recommend that you contact the relevant authorities for further information.

Hiring a student for an internship

The internship is a formative and supervised professional experience, that takes place during the students academic career. It is contingent to a tripartite agreement between the student, the company and either the faculty of the Career centre, where the student has the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired during his or her academic training.

Stage intra-cursus

An internship is intra-curricular when it is a part of the academic program/curricula. It may be compulsory or optional, is subject to academic supervision and allows the student to obtain ECTS credits. Students must contact their faculty secretariat to find out about the terms and conditions of the internship (requirements, duration, deliverables, etc.).

Requirements
  • The student is registered at the UNIGE for the duration of the internship
  • The internship is an integral part of the academic program/curricula
  • The internship is subject to academic supervision
  • The internship allows the student to obtain ECTS credits

Extra-curricular internship

Students whose academic program/curricula does not include an internship, but who wish to gain additional experience to increase their employability, may carry out an extra-curricular internship. The student must apply for an internship agreement with the Career Centre, which will check the terms and conditions of the internship (duration, learning objectivs, etc.).

Requirements
  • The student is registered at the UNIGE for the duration of the internship
  • The internship may not exceed 6 months
  • The internship must be more than 30% of the student's time
  • The internship must be formative for the student
  • The student must request an internship agreement from the Career Centre
  • We recommend a stipend of CHF 2,500 per month
